Holding a steady but motoring pace is way better than going hard and blowing up early. Fighting the urge to GO at the start makes a big difference a couple hundred miles later.
My rule of thumb regarding pacing: on a ride/ race/ whatever like CTC, if you can't EASILY carry on a conversation with someone as you ride, you're probably riding too hard. Save for when riding up the occasional steep hill, perhaps. Any gasping at all while you talk is a sign that you'll be cooked by the end of the first 200K (or less)

Not sure if I'm ready for it again. Maybe taking a more leisurely approach would be a better idea.
